Bunk Silo

A horizontal, open-faced storage structure for ensiling forage — concrete walls with an exposed feedout face. The dominant silage storage form on US dairies. Often called a 'bunker silo'.

A bunk silo (used interchangeably with bunker silo) is a horizontal, open-topped storage structure for ensiling forage. Forage is packed in layers between concrete walls — sometimes with a third back wall, sometimes drive-through — and covered with plastic to exclude oxygen during fermentation. Feedout happens at one open face, which is shaved progressively as the dairy works through the pile.

Bunk silos are the dominant silage storage form on US dairies, displacing the upright concrete-tower silos that were standard a generation ago. The reasons are operational, not philosophical:

  • Bunkers fill faster, which means less oxygen exposure during the critical ensiling window.
  • They scale with herd size — you build longer walls instead of taller ones.
  • Feedout is a loader-and-truck operation rather than a top-down unloader, so labor and maintenance are simpler.
  • Capital cost per ton stored is dramatically lower.

How a bunk silo actually performs

A bunk silo’s feed quality is determined by three numbers:

  1. Packing density. Higher density means less oxygen in the pile, which means less fermentation loss and a more stable feedout face. Industry targets are 14–16 lb DM per cubic foot for corn silage; many operations measure in the 10–12 range and lose dry matter accordingly.
  2. Cover quality and seal. Plastic, oxygen-barrier film, weight (tires, gravel bags) — anything that lets air through the top is a direct cause of surface spoilage and shrink.
  3. Face management at feedout. The exposed feedout face is the second-biggest source of loss after the cover. A clean, square face shaved daily holds quality. A ragged face that’s been open three days is feeding spoiled material.

Measuring inventory in a bunk silo

The traditional approach — tape measure, pacing the wall, applying a textbook density assumption — typically carries 10–25% error before any density assumption goes in. That’s a meaningful problem on a dairy with eight figures of feed cost, because it propagates into ration decisions, purchase timing, and shrink benchmarking.

Modern dairies measure bunkers with drone-based photogrammetry anchored to surveyed Ground Control Points, producing volumetric numbers that hold up against ground-truth weights within a few percent. Combined with face density sampling, this produces a defensible dry-matter tonnage figure. Bunk silo vs. drive-over pile vs. bag

Three storage forms, three different failure modes:

  • Bunk silo (walled bunker) — best density, controlled face, capital cost up front. The dominant choice on growing dairies.
  • Drive-over pile — no walls, packed and covered on a graded pad. Cheap, fast, scales infinitely. Density and shape control are harder, so shrink tends to run higher.
  • Silage bag — plastic tube filled by a bagger. Excellent for smaller volumes or specialty forages. Density is mechanical and consistent. Capital is per-fill rather than upfront.

Most large dairies run a combination — bunkers for the main corn silage volume, piles or bags for haylage or specialty forages.
